Storyline

En una caleta aquejada por la contaminación que emite la termoeléctrica local, Mecha (33) es el alma en pena de una activista medioambiental, fallecida en circunstancias sospechosas. El día posterior a su muerte, mientras acompaña a su familia en el duelo, intentará que su hijo Juan (16) deje de lado sus sentimientos en contra de ella.

Resumen

¡Hola a tod@s!

La Mecha es un cortometraje de técnica mixta (live action, rotoscopia y post-producción digital), ópera prima de un equipo formado por estudiantes de Dirección Audiovisual UC, quienes junto a un elenco de trayectoria y asesores de experiencia buscan realizar y finalizar su proyecto de título que fue filmado en octubre de 2020. 

La Mecha será protagonizada por Giannina Fruttero, actriz con destacada participación en la serie Ramona (TVN) de Andrés Wood y en diversas películas chilenas. Además, en el año 2019 ganó el premio revelación en los premios Caleuche, otorgado por Chile Actores.

Juan, el hijo de Mecha, será interpretado por Roberto Villena, joven actor de Teatro UC, quien estuvo en el reparto del premiado cortometraje Fiebre Austral.

Alicia, la madre de Mecha, será interpretada por Paula Zúñiga, destacada actriz y docente con una larga trayectoria en cine, teatro y televisión. Algunas de sus obras son Hilda Peña, Trewa y Un montón de brujas volando por el cielo.

Finalmente, Nicanor, el padre de Mecha, estará en manos de Francisco Reyes, reconocido actor de cine y televisión que ha aparecido en Prófugos, Una mujer fantástica y La Jauría.

Un Cortometraje de impacto

La inspiración que lleva a este cortometraje viene de casos reales en Chile y el mundo, donde año a año existen muertes en circunstancias extrañas y poco documentadas de activistas medioambientales. Sólo en 2019, la ONG Global Witness documentó 212 fallecimientos de personas, a consecuencia del rol que tomaban en defensa de sus hogares y sus intentos por detener la destrucción de un espacio comunitario. Es decir, 4 personas a la semana.

Es por esto, que el corto busca poner en relevancia dos importantes problemáticas socio ambientales que se dan en Chile y América Latina: 

• Las preocupantes muertes de activistas medioambientales que se alzan frente a las injusticias de sus territorios.

• La agobiante contaminación que producen las 29 termoeléctricas a carbón que siguen existiendo en diferentes ciudades del país. 

En este sentido, con La Mecha nos interesa aportar a la reflexión sobre las consecuencias humanas y emocionales que deja la ausencia de un ser querido en los núcleos familiares, la memoria sobre ellos y las formas de conseguir paz mientras la injusticia siga latente. Por otro lado, para nosotros es vital cuestionar la existencia de las zonas de sacrificio que están siendo sobreexplotadas en todo ámbito: político, social y económico, sin tener presente una sustentabilidad de la sociedad a largo plazo, y causando graves consecuencias en las personas.

A partir de una propuesta audiovisual innovadora de técnica mixta, nos motiva hablar de temáticas políticas sociales a través de un género fantástico y autoral, para así abrir un camino a las narrativas en formatos no tradicionales en Chile que tengan un estilo, tono y género particular. 

¿Para qué necesitamos tu aporte?

La Mecha es un cortometraje ambicioso en términos audiovisuales y la post-producción digital es clave para crear un proyecto con un estándar internacional. 

Nuestro modelo de financiamiento compartido busca reunir CLP $2.000.000 (USD $2.650) a través de este campaña, para lograr cubrir los siguientes gastos con sus respectivos porcentajes: 

• Post-producción de imagen y sonido (Se cubrirá con el 60% del total).

• Tarifas para distribución en festivales en Chile y el extranjero (Se cubrirá con el 40% del total). 

El cortometraje será enviado a los festivales de cine más reconocidos del mundo, en los que deseamos realizar nuestra premiere y empezar nuestro recorrido internacional. Posterior a esto, pretendemos exhibirlo en festivales nacionales, con foco en el cine social latinoamericano y de animación, como también en comunidades territoriales latinoamericanas para generar conversaciones con respecto a la temática. 

Cronograma

Durante el año 2020, como equipo hemos trabajado arduamente semana a semana a través de Zoom en el desarrollo de la idea, el guion y  la pre-producción. El rodaje con les actores fue realizado de manera presencial en el Centro de Cine y Creación (CCC), durante octubre y noviembre de este año, con todas las medidas sanitarias debido a la pandemia. 

La post-producción completa del cortometraje tomará dos meses, para estar completada a comienzos del 2021, y luego empezar con la distribución.

Storyline

In a town affected by pollution emitted by the local thermal power station, Mecha (33) is the suffering soul of an environmental activist, who died under suspicious circumstances. The day after her death, while accompanying her family in their grief, she will try to get her son Juan (16) to put aside his feelings against her.

Summary

Hello everyone!

We are Nicholas, Sofía, Tomás & Cattalina, film students at Universidad Católica in Chile, and we are working on our first professional film. La Mecha is our thesis project, a mixed media short (live action, rotoscopy and digital post-production), that we seek to carry out with your support, along with a cast with trajectory and experienced advisers of Chile’s film industry. 

La Mecha will star Giannina Fruttero, an actress with an outstanding participation in the series Ramona (TVN) by Andrés Wood, and various chilean films. In 2019 she won the revelation prize at the Caleuche Awards granted by Chile Actores.

Juan, Mecha's son, will be played by Roberto Villena, a young actor from UC School of Theatre, who was in the cast of the award-winning short film Fiebre Austral.

Alicia, Mecha's mother, will be played by Paula Zúñiga, an outstanding actress and teacher with a long career in film, theater and television. Some of her works are Hilda Peña, Trewa and A bunch of witches flying through the sky.

Finally, Nicanor, Mecha's father, will be in the hands of Francisco Reyes, a renowned film and television actor who has appeared in Oscar winning A Fantastic Woman, HBO’s Prófugos and Amazon’s La Jauría.

A short film with impact 

The inspiration that leads to this short film comes from real cases in Chile and other countries, where every year there are deaths of environmental activists in strange and poorly documented circumstances. Only in 2019, the NGO Global Witness documented 212 deaths of people, as a result of the role they took in defense of their homes and their attempts to stop the destruction of a community. That is, 4 people a week.

That is why this short seeks to highlight two important socio-environmental problems that occur in Chile and Latin America:

• The worrying deaths of environmental activists who rise up against the injustices in their territories.

• The overwhelming pollution produced by the 29 coal-fired thermal power stations that still exist in different cities of the country.

In this sense, in La Mecha we are interested in reflecting about the human and emotional consequences that the absence of a loved one leaves in a family unit, the remembrance of them and the ways to achieve peace while injustice remains latent. On the other hand, for us it’s vital to question the existence of sacrifice zones, areas that are overexploited in all aspects: political, social and economic, without taking into account a long-term sustainability of society, causing serious consequences in people.

Based on an innovative audiovisual proposal of mixed media, we are motivated to talk about socio-political topics through fantasy and auteur genre, in order to open a path to narratives in non-traditional formats in Chile that have a particular style, tone and genre .

Why do we need your contribution?

La Mecha is an ambitious short film in audiovisual terms, and digital post-production is a key part for creating a project according to an international standard.

Our shared financing model seeks to raise CLP $2,000,000 (USD $2,650) through this campaign to cover the following expenses with their respective percentage:

• Image and sound post-production (Will be provided from the 60% of the total).

• Distribution Fees at festivals in Chile and abroad (Will be provided from the 40% of the total).

This short film will be sent to the most recognized film festivals in the world, in which we wish to make our premiere and begin an international tour. After this, we intend to exhibit it in national festivals focused on Latin American social and animation cinema, as well as in Latin American territorial communities to generate conversations about the subject.

Our Schedule

During 2020, as a team we have worked hard every week via Zoom in the development of the idea, the script and the pre-production. The live action filming with the cast was carried out at the Cinema & Creation Centre (CCC), during october and november of this year, with all the sanitary measures due to the pandemic.

The complete post-production (rotoscopy & digital post) of the short film will take two months, to be completed by the beginning of 2021, and then start with the distribution.
